Why word counts matter for writing platforms
Most publishing platforms enforce limits for a reason: Twitter/X caps posts at 280 characters to keep them scannable, meta descriptions get cut off by Google around 155-160 characters, and academic or job application submissions often specify a word count to keep responses focused rather than padded. Knowing your count before you submit saves the frustration of a form silently truncating your carefully worded paragraph.
Reading level and pacing
Beyond raw counts, average sentence length is a rough proxy for readability — sentences consistently over 25-30 words tend to feel dense and hard to follow aloud, while a mix of short and medium sentences reads more naturally. If your average sentence length here looks high, that's often the easiest single edit to make a piece feel lighter.

Does this count differ from Microsoft Word's count?
